Damage to sperm DNA

Halosperm test

As part of a spermogram, the sperm are examined using a light microscope.

However, it cannot be determined whether the genetic material of the sperm is damaged. The HALO test is used to detect fragmentation, i.e., the damage in the genetic material of the sperm. With the help of the HALO test, it is possible to determine how many sperm have genetic damage and how many are „healthy“ – in the sense that they do not have any genetic damage. However, an exact definition of the damage cannot be given; only the percentage of sperm with damage can be determined.

Clinical relevance:

The result of the HALO test is the representation of the degree of fragmentation by the DFI value (DNA Fragmentation Index). The DFI value indicates how many percent of the sperm have damage to their genetic material.

Recent studies, for example, indicate that an increased DFI and the associated damage to the sperm can also be a reason for the failure of pregnancy or repeated miscarriages.

We are now offering appointments for a halosperm diagnosis in our practice.
