Therapy of endometriosis

Endometriosis is treated in our clinic using a consistent but individually tailored treatment plan. The combination of various surgical techniques with modern hormone preparations or medications, as well as complementary therapeutic approaches, are part of the treatment strategy.

Our women with fertility problems suffering from endometriosis are not provided with a rigidly defined treatment plan, but are first given stage-appropriate advice and then can discuss the treatment regimen with the treating physician.

Our goal is to eliminate or reduce the symptoms and minimize the occurrence of new endometrial growths with all their associated problems, thereby improving the quality of life. Another goal is to strengthen the immune system and provide psychological support for our patients.

Therapy process

At the beginning of the medical discussion, we will discuss the goal of the treatment: What is your priority?

  1. Do you have a desire to have children? Or
  2. Should „only“ endometriosis be treated?

During the consultation, we will develop a customized therapy management plan for you. We are a team of specialists who work „hand in hand.“ Surgeons, endocrinologists and specialists in fertility, pain therapists, urologists, surgeons, radiologists – but also doctors for natural therapies such as homeopathy, acupuncture, bio-resonance therapy, and psychologists.

The treatment should be tailored to the individual woman, her medical history, her individual life situation and her needs, and should be part of a long-term, consistent treatment plan.

There is no causal (eliminating the cause) therapy for endometriosis; that is, all the therapies we can use are symptomatic: that is, if the therapy is discontinued, the disease can, depending on the stage, potentially return quickly.

Therapy usually begins with a „keyhole operation.“ During this procedure, the surgeon obtains an image of the extent of the disease, takes samples for microscopic examination, and aims to completely remove the endometriosis, if possible. In the case of advanced endometriosis, Dr. A. Ebert, Professor of Surgery at the Humboldt Clinic, is the surgeon who Dr. Halis performs the surgery. In this case, a surgeon or urologist is always available in case the operation needs to be completed incompletely.

Now it is relevant whether you Infertility If so, the fertility treatment should be carried out immediately afterwards.

Once your family planning is complete, we will work together on a therapy plan based on several options:

Hormone therapies

Since endometriosis tissue is in most cases estrogen-dependent, many therapies aim to reduce the amount of estrogen in the body. This is intended to curb the malignant tissue – ideally to „atrophy“ (a „shrinkage“). The types of hormone therapy are diverse and will be explained to you during the consultation (only estrogen, combined preparations such as the pill, the hormone spiral).

Pain therapy

Pain medications have no effect on the course of the actual disease. Therefore, they are referred to as „symptomatic therapy.“ Pain should be treated sufficiently and should under no circumstances be endured „heroically“ until it is truly unbearable. The sooner effective pain therapy is started, the more likely it is that the patient’s pain can be reduced again with pain medication. The goal should be to avoid the development of a pain memory.

Complementary treatment options

Acupuncture, homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), natural healing therapies, bio-resonance therapy, but also yoga, Tai Chi, progressive muscle relaxation are included. These therapies are not causal (correcting the cause). But they improve well-being and strengthen the immune system. Relaxation techniques can relieve painful tension. Unfortunately, none of these approaches is capable of curing endometriosis.

Endometriosis must be diagnosed early and treated consistently

We are involved in training projects for endometriosis patients (for example, in collaboration with the Medical University of Hanover, Dr. Iris Brandes), and in awareness-raising projects for adolescents (teenagers and young women). Young girls in particular need trusted contact points; they must not be led to believe by the environment that pain during menstruation is normal, even if they take painkillers to be able to go to school.

We design and participate in long-term studies and research projects in order to achieve even more gentle treatment. Diagnostic procedures and Therapies to develop!
