Blastocyst culture
Whether it's after IVF or IVF/ICSI, Or, alternatively, in the so-called „Cryo cycle“Embryos can be cultured for 2 to 3 or even up to the 5th day. This is also possible in Germany, with its strict embryo protection law, and is also carried out with great success by some centers. However, the problem in Germany is that already on the 1st day of culture, those cells must be selected that are to be transferred, which is usually 2-3 embryos per cycle (see). IVF RegisterHowever, not even every „top-quality embryo“ reaches this stage, as the conditions in the incubator are not as optimal as those in the uterus. It must be assumed that only 25-50% of the „day 2 embryos“ will develop into a blastocyst.
The main advantage of the 5-day culture can actually only be profited from if it is possible to select from all (that is, more than 2-3) embryos. Therefore, apart from exceptions, it makes little sense in Germany to perform blastocyst culture; indeed, a potentially possible pregnancy might not even be possible as a result.
Under the conditions of the German Embryo Protection Act, it is better to perform the embryo transfer on the 2nd or 3rd day of pregnancy.
