Thyroid antibodies

Thyroid antibodies occurrence/treatment

08.03.2010

In a study published in “Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology” in 2009, Italian researchers led by Alberto Revelli compared the incidence of thyroid antibodies (SD-AK), specifically ATA (Anti-Thyroid Antibody). There is some evidence that SD-AK IVF have a negative impact on fertility on the one hand and on the pregnancy rate after childbirth on the other.

Both in euthyroid fertile women (normal SD hormone levels) and in euthyroid infertile women, these SD-AKs are found in 10.5%. Interestingly, in women with endometriosis, those with reduced ovarian reserve, and those with hyperprolactinemia, ATA-SD-AKs were found in 21.8%, 22.5%, and 14.1%, respectively.

A group of ATA positive female patients with normal SD hormones received therapy accompanied by either L-thyroxine (SD hormone) alone or in addition to acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and prednisolone (cortisone).

The patients with the 3-fold combination had a significantly better pregnancy rate of 25.6% than those in the other group (17.7%).

Conclusion: The 3-fold combination therapy should be used in female patients who are positive for ATA. Since even among 105 women with normal thyroid hormones, ATA AK occurs, they should constitute a fixed component of the basic fertility therapy.
